I have long enjoyed Rublev’s icon of the Trinity. It welcomes us in to sit there with them.

This painting was actually done during the first, very frightening, wave of Covid. A close relative, (with underlying health condition) was really ill and I was scared. A lot of people prayed for him, I found myself asking for prayer from others, not something I find easy to do. He did recover and we were all very grateful. I know of others who didn’t make it. I know we will never fully understand prayer.

When I tried to paint people fervently praying I found it to be a humbling experience. It gave me a visual reminder that we are very much dependant on God, not just on ourselves.

The painting was done with a printing technique to get that old, faded effect that illustrates the ancient icon. The modern praying people are drawn into that circle of prayer that has existed for all time.
