Description

‘Atonement' - A Fine Art Print of my original Mixed Media Painting.

I created this painting live at an Easter Good Friday service during Holy Week 2018.

This idea for the composition came into my mind as I watched a clip from the film, ‘The Passion of The Christ’ that was played as part of the service.

As I watched, my eyes kept being drawn to the awful piercing jaggedness of the crown of thorns upon Jesus' head and his torn, bruised and blood-soaked face. I was impacted again by the brutal violence of it all and how much blood there was.

Such self-sacrifice.

So, turning to my canvas, I painted dark red colours and sharp black thorns, trying to capture something of the brutality and the blood being spilled. Using my water sprayer made the paint run down the page which matched the blood flowing down the body of Jesus on that awful cross. Then, trying to realise the picture in my minds eye, I turned my canvas upside down meaning the ‘blood droplets’ could ‘become’ butterflies. Then taking some orange and gold paint, I began painting-in the delicate wings of many butterflies.. because I feel like the butterflies rising up might represent the freedom Jesus purchased for us with His blood. Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness, no cleansing, no atonement [Heb 9:22). In laying down His one precious life, Jesus paid the ransom for many. He paid the ransom for me. The debt I owed, He paid in blood, He paid in full.

’and by His wounds we are healed.’ Isaiah 53:5. The scandalous wonder of it all!

This piece is special to me and causes me to feel deep gratitude to Jesus every time I look at it, but especially over Easter weekend.

From brutality to beauty. Thorns to delicate wings. Brokenness to wholeness. From the terrible to the tender. Friday to Sunday. Darkness giving way to glorious Light! Night to New Dawn! Death to Resurrection Life! Grave to Victory! Mourning to dancing! Grace to Grace!
