I love this Psalm that lets us listen in on a heart that’s clearly raw and heavy-in-processing.

There’s a whole mix of expressions laid bare...longing, thirst, tears, heart cries, heartbreak, courage, praise, depression, despair, hope, remembering God’s goodness, His glory, strength, deep need, sorrow, singing, prayers, anguish, wounding, promises, declarations, trust, breakthrough, praise again. I see in this Psalm someone wrestling to make sense of some stuff and who’s being very honest with God about how it feels and what it looks like from his perspective. But then its as if, amidst his lamenting, he begins to speak encouragement over himself…remembering all the ways God has helped him & come through for him and been like a mighty Mountain of Strength and a Rock of Peace…and he calls out again to the deep kindness of his Faithful, ageless God and re-sets his hope in Him alone.

Personally, I can relate a lot to the raw emotions being expressed here. The coming together of this piece happened in several stages throughout the year which followed our IVF journey which, after starting well, sadly didn’t end as we had hoped. Perhaps some of the imagery within the piece speaks to that. Certainly, the phrase, ‘deep calls to deep’ [Ps 42v7,NIV] articulates something of our lament, and yet also something of the Love we trust in to bring us through it…

A bit like the hummingbird depends on the nectar it accesses only from the deep place within a specific flower, so my life source is and will only ever be God. Do I understand everything? No. There is much I don’t, but I choose to believe in Deep Kindness of His Love, even in seasons of sorrow.

Its my prayer this brings encouragement—-Karen
