Contemporary mixed media paintings and textile art which incorporate painting, mono printing, hand painted fabrics, hand stitching and free motion embroidery

Hi, my name is Lisa and I’m a mixed media artist from Northern Ireland. I have always loved art and am passionate about the many ways it can be used for expression, encouragement, communication and learning.

I studied fine art and design at St. Martins College in Lancaster, specialising in painting and sculptural ceramics. I had initially planned on being a teacher but wanted to pursue my art so set teaching aside. God however had different plans, and gradually brought me back to teaching but as an art and special needs teacher, which I have been doing for the last 18 years. Over the years the workload of teaching took over, and after a few trials in my personal life and health wise, I began teaching part time and turned back to my art, but this time as my way of processing my experiences and making sense of the world (almost like my own personal therapy!)

I have always wanted to learn how to use a sewing machine and 3 years ago I taught myself how to do free motion embroidery (the fancy way of saying I draw with my machine, using the thread and fabric like my page and pencil.) I use a number of techniques in my art. For my newest textile paintings, I create hand painted and printed fabric, which I then layer and embellish with hand or free motion embroidery on rag paper; For my fine art work I use oils, acrylics, wax and charcoal on canvas; and for my textile hangings I use fabric and 100%wool felt with free motion embroidery on top. When I begin to create, I switch off from any worries and enjoy some time to be still with God and create. Making art has become like breathing for me and its when I’m at my happiest and have a sense of purpose (either with my own art or teaching others.)

My inspiration comes from nature, whether the colours of a sunset or the textures of a coast or woodland or garden, birds or wildlife. I love capturing colour and texture in different ways and am also inspired by scripture, music lyrics and emotion. Not all of my pieces contain scripture references, but I feel they each hold a message for every individual if they take the time to be still and reflect on them. I hope you enjoy my work.
