Meet the Makers: Su-Ann Foulds of Morning by Morning Illustrations

Today, Menekse is chatting to Su-Ann Foulds of Morning by Morning Illustrations

Today, we're meeting Su-Ann Foulds, the artist and designer being Morning by Morning Illustrations. Originally from Malaysia, Su-Ann moved to London to study BSc Urban Planning, Design & Management followed by MSc Building & Urban Design in Development. She’s now married to Sam, and they live in London with their new daughter, Evangeline.

Su-Ann now creates illustrated and hand-lettered paper goods for her business, Morning by Morning Illustrations, whether it’s whimsical greetings cards, sweet stickers perfect for adding to happy mail, or her ever popular weekly Christian planner pad. Alongside this, she’s a freelance graphic designer and artist.

Thanks for joining us today, Su-Ann! Firstly, we’d love to hear how you became a Christian?

I was born into a Christian family and remember asking Jesus to be my Lord and Saviour when I was 4 years old. I always knew who God was and always wanted to please Him, but I didn't quite understand the gospel until I was 20 years old.

It was then that I asked God that if He was real, He would help me make sense of the Christian faith –  if not, I didn’t want to be a part of it as it was too difficult. I remember feeling a strong sense of His presence and all my mess and entanglements being lifted, and since then, understanding that it's totally by His grace that I am free and saved. I've wanted to follow Him ever since.

I know that you and your husband, Sam, are very involved in your local church, and have seen first-hand what an incredible witness of the life of Christ you are to those in your local community. What ministries are you involved in?

Being in a small church means that you can be involved in quite a lot of ministries as there’s always the need to fill a gap! The two ministries I love serving in are cooking meals for our prayer gatherings (or anything involved with food and hospitality!) and helping out with the kids’ work

You’ve got an interesting background, having done two degrees in urban development. When did you decide to set up your own business?

After university, I got a job as a Children’s Worker with our church. I’d prayed about doing something creative for a few years, and when I finished my job at the church, I asked the Lord what ministry I could invest in and felt led to start a new creative ministry.

The idea started when I thought about how I could get people to be reminded of God's word each day around their homes, knowing that His mercies are new every morning. So I started sketching a lot of Bible verses with a brush pen and then things grew from there.

What has been the biggest challenge for you so far since setting up your business?

Being self-employed means you don't know whether you'll earn enough in the next month and I've never been in that situation before, so the biggest challenge for me was to literally trust God when He says 'Don't be anxious about tomorrow' and to know that He'll provide what I need. It's been amazing to see Him provide in ways that are totally out of my control and it's really grown my faith, but it's a challenge that will continue pop up from time to time.

How do you develop new products and ideas? Can you give us an insight into your design process?

It usually starts with creating a moodboard with images and ideas from Pinterest, then hand-lettering various verses that come into my head or painting various patterns or objects that have inspired me and then building a collection around that.

I work mainly with brush pens, gouache paints and digital illustration and then everything gets digitally cleaned up on Adobe Illustrator.

What are some of your favourite business resources for running a creative business?

Can I say Menekse and the Cheerfully Given community?! :-P

Haha, well we’re glad that we can support you! Do you tend to listen to anything while you work?

Yes, almost always. At the moment, my favourite albums are “You Make Me Brave” by Bethel, “Only the Lonely” by Colony House and a range of Hillsong music.

We’ve chatted quite a lot about business and how the Lord led you into running Morning by Morning Illustrations. Outside of work, what would your perfect day look like?

Anything that involves being by the beach with people and doing something active like swimming, exploring a new place, and tasting new foods. Then finishing the day by watching a good film on a comfy couch!

You are an incredible cook, and have already mentioned that’s an area of joy for you in both ministry and your free time. Do you have a favourite food?

This is such a tough question because I LOVE food and love so many different cuisines! But if I had to eat something every day, I would choose Chicken Rice which is a simple Malaysian meal.

Thanks again for chatting with us today, Su-Ann! It was great to learn a bit more about you and your business.

Su-Ann and Sam have recently welcomed their little girl, Evangeline, into the world. She’s now around three weeks old! Praise Jesus! Please pray as they share Jesus with this new little soul, and as they adapt to parenthood for the first time.
