Galentine's Day started as a sitcom joke in a 2010 episode of Amy Poehler's Parks and Recreation. So often, women are pitted against each other and comparison syndrome can stop us from truly celebrating the women in our lives. But to coin a couple of Pinterest cliches: a rising tide lifts all boats, and the success of another woman does not mean your failure. Galentine's Day is a way for us to affirm and encourage our amazing female friends, to celebrate the strong, brave women in our lives, and to toast those incredible female friendships that shape who we are.
"Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It's like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas." - Leslie Knope, Parks and Recreation
Galentine's Day has seen a massive increase in popularity over recent years, but it's held a special place in my heart since I first saw Parks and Recreation a few years ago. It's held on February 13th, so it isn't taking the place of any Valentine's Day celebrations you might have planned, but it's an extra opportunity to express joy and gratitude for the wonderful people around us.
Here are some of our top picks for Galentine's Day gifts with a Christian twist, so you can affirm all those beautiful women of God and point them to Jesus during these grey, dreary winter weeks.
"He will cover you with his feathers, under His wings you will find refuge."
This flamingo-inspired embroidery hoop art by Ellen at Faith in Fabric is a unique way to add a splash of sunshine to your home. Featuring Ellen's free motion embroidery on an applique flamingo design, the words from Psalm 91:4 have been hand-stamped around the hoop to create an eye-catching piece of Christian wall art. Embroidery hoop art is a versatile way to decorate your home -- as part of a gallery wall, it adds an interesting new shape (and makes a change from rectangular artwork!), or it can be used to style a mantelpiece or bookshelf.
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another."
Valentine's Day traditionally celebrates romantic love, but as Christians we're called to love everyone! So why not celebrate platonic love while we're at it? Fill this "Be My Palentine" greeting card with encouraging verses and affirmations of all the ways your friend inspires you, and pop it in the post to them to give them some seriously happy mail. At only £2.20, you could send one to five different friends as an act of kindness to kick off Lent (which starts on Valentine's Day this year).
"She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her."
Every woman of noble character needs this in her kitchen cupboard! What better way to start the day than with a strong mug of tea or coffee in this Bible verse mug? Proverbs 3:15 reminds us of how precious it is to find Wisdom - the Holy Spirit. Proverbs also speaks of noble women as being worth more than rubies, so it might make a particularly encouraging gift for anyone who's been through a significant life change recently: whether it's moving to a new city, having a baby, or starting a new job, to remind them of their worth in Christ. Plus, it has free UK delivery, so that's a winner!
Another gift inspired by the words of Proverbs 3:15, this print reads "You are more precious than jewels" and is an original design by Patrick Laurent of Quiet Boy Studio. The illustration and typography is all hand-drawn by Patrick before being digitised to create a high-end art print. Featuring beautiful pops of colour, it's the perfect way to brighten up your home during those dark February days when it feels like winter just won't end.
One of the hardest things about winter for me is the relentless darkness. It feels like there is barely any daylight, and even when there is, it's overcast and grey and rainy. It can very quickly lead me to feel despondent and depressed, and lose all perspective: the Living God has got this! Instead of languishing around in a winter-induced existential crisis, I am so grateful for friends who lift my eyes up to the Morning Star, the risen Jesus who fills us with His Spirit and warms our hearts with His presence.
This bright card by George at Ooh I Like That Design is a breath of fresh air, with a summery colour palette that provides an instant mood-booster. Fill it with your favourite things about our wonderful Jesus, and send it to a friend to help them remember that their heavenly Father has everything in His hands.
This set of six badges has been inspired by six different Bible passages to remind you (or the women in your life) of who you are in Jesus.
- Strong (Joshua 1:9)
- Fearless (Isaiah 43:1)
- Beautiful (Song of Solomon 4:7)
- Precious (Proverbs 3:15)
- A Treasure (Zechariah 9:16)
- An Adventurer (Psalm 84:5)
These look great attached to a satchel or worn on a denim jacket, and are a great way to remind us that we are clothed in Christ, and are lights for Him, even when we're surrounded by the darkness of sin.
The wonderful thing about being a Christian is that even when times are brutally tough, we can be filled with joy. That reminder that the Living God cares for them could be the difference between a good day and a bad day for a friend going through a hard time -- He's always with us, and He loves us deeply, but it can be easy to forget when we feel utterly downhearted. This card by Frog and Gnome features the words "Keep going lovely one, God cares for you, try not to worry." and is one of the loveliest Christian encouragement cards we've seen.
This wooden banner is another lovely way to decorate your walls! It comes ready mounted in the banner frame so you can hang it straight on your walls. It reads: "I am a daughter of the King who is not moved by the world, for my God is with me and goes before me. I do not fear for I am His."
There is a big trend towards affirmations and mantras, and a lot of them are very unhelpful when it comes to living the way of Jesus, but this is a beautiful reminder that everything we are and do is shaped by the Triune God. When we're thinking about anything connected to our identity, we must start with Jesus! We are a new creation in Him, so He shapes who we are, how we live, and what our hearts are set on.
These watercolour postcards have a beautiful blue/green to pink ombre effect, and feature three of Liz's hand-lettered designs to encourage us to stand firm in His love. There are three designs, with two postcards of each design in the pack. They're a gorgeous matte-velvet finish, and can be popped on the fridge or into a 6" x 4" frame to provide long-term encouragement!
This collection of Christian postcards includes the following Bible verses:
- I Will Not Be Shaken - Psalm 62:6 (x 2)
- His Love Gives Life - John 10:10 (x 2)
- You Comfort Brings Me Joy - Psalm 94:19 (x 2)
This "Hope" necklace is part of the Izzy and Pop x Bloom Jewellery collaboration that you all went ga-ga for when it launched at the end of last year! Featuring lettering by Liz of Izzy and Pop, Kate has created a range of necklaces using 3D printing techniques and gold fastenings to create a high-end product for a budget price (each necklace is only £12.99). There are three designs in two different colour options, and each one comes on a coordinating Scripture card with an encouraging verse.
"As a barnacle clings to the belly of a whale, so shall I cling to thee."
This isn't a Bible verse card, but we can't resist sharing it -- especially as it was a crowd favourite at all of our in-person events last year. It's a versatile design, because you could easily send it as an anniversary or Valentine's Day card for your significant other. However, if you're like me, you've got at least three friends you would send this to as well! Gotta remind your BFFs that they're never going to get rid of you. At only £2, it's also one of those buy-now-save-for-later cards (aka find it in a drawer when you next move house and have a good old giggle before sending it to a friend in 2021).
"Be still and know that I am God."
Bethany of More Than Gold Designs has recently launched a set of 5" x 7" prints featuring stunning marble patterns alongside her hand-lettered designs. All of her products feature sumptuous details that give a really high quality finish, and these are no exception. Printed onto a thick cardstock, the designs have a velvet lamination which gives them a matte finish, and the lettering features decadent gold foil detail which really brings the verses to life.
Grace Gatley is a textile genius. She takes vintage lace and old pieces of linen, and layers them together before embellishing them with her intricate embroidery. Her original pieces take days to create, so Grace has created a range of prints and cards that enable us to enjoy her designs at a more day-to-day price. This particular design features the verse from Philippians 4:8 - "Whatever is noble, whatever is true, whatever is lovely, think about these things."
It's printed onto luxury, textured cardstock and is ideal for popping to a friend to tell them you think they're amazing.
This is probably one of the most well-known verses from the story of Ruth and Naomi, and what better way to celebrate Galentine's Day than with these two inspiring women of God and their friendship? These tote bags by Alice and The Mustard Seed feature one of Alice's original watercolour designs digitally-printed onto a really high quality canvas to create a beautiful Christian tote bag.
There's plenty to inspire you on the rest of the website as well, but hopefully this provides a starting point for you to bless the amazing women in your life this Galentine's Day!
Also celebrated around February 13th/14th, but not attributable to a particular date or origin, is Palentine's Day. Basically, we like using anything ending in "-alentine" to celebrate relationships in all their forms! So whether or not you've got a "traditional" Valentine this year, why not use the opportunity to spread a little bit of love and encouragement amongst your friends?
